  • 480 grams GLORIA cake flour
  • 2 tablespoon(s) GLORIA baking pwder
  • 2 teaspoon(s) cream of tartar
  • 100 grams brown sugar
  • 4 IRVINE'S large eggs, beaten
  • 250 ml SPAR UHT milk
  • 1 litre(s) SPAR Canola oil for deep frying


  1. Sift flour together with baking powder and cream of tartar
  2. Add the sugar, create a well in the centre of the flour mixture, pour in the eggs and half of the milk and carefully mix in.  Add enough of the rest of the milk to form a stiff batter
  3. Het the oil, drop in spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil and deep-fry until golden brown on all sides (about 4 mins).  Test first one to see if cooked through - increase time if need be.  Cook in batches of 4.
  4. Drain on kitchen paper and serve warm
  5. TIP: Savoury - serve with mince or cheese filling  Sweet: fill with butter, jam, honey or syrup
